Chinese Crash Test Disasters

China is now on the threshold of being the world's largest automotive manufacturer with almost everyone that builds cars would want to start an automotive assembly plant there. To name a few, brands like Audi, Volkswagen, General Motors, Chrysler, Honda and Toyota are in there.

Chinese home brands like Chery, Brilliance, Hongqi and many others are coming out with new models in big numbers. However, recent crash tests done on two Chinese models must have shocked everyone as to the safety if not the build quality of these home brands.

One of them is the Brilliance BS6, a BMW lookalike model. Given the sheer numbers on Chinese roads, this model must be very popular. However, Brilliance BS6 turns out to be not so brilliant after all in a recent crash test done in Germany. The car completely flunked the crash test and was awarded one star. The above YouTube video shows the crash test of the Brilliance BS6.

This prompted the Company to delist in NYSE as trading volume fell. A full report is available on Edmunds.

In another trial in Russia, a Chery Amulet build by China's largest automotive manufacturer was pummeled in a crash test. The Russian car magazine that organized the test said it was one of the worst performances ever and called upon Chery Automobile Co. to withdraw the car from the market. Ironically named the Amulet, the car does not seem to be provide any form of protection in a head on collision. The Chery Amulet crash test is seen in the second video.
